Q.1 What is “CLASSIC SPRAY PAINT” (CSP)?

A. To put it simply- it is the same conventional paint but in a different format. The paint is packaged in an aerosol can under pressure with a gaseous propellant for release as a spray of fine particles of paint on the surface to be painted to form a fine coat of paint, whereas the propellant gas gets released in the atmosphere.

Q.2 What are the unique features of CSP that makes it unique compared to “the conventional paint”?

  • It is “ready to use” paint that requires neither thinner to be mixed nor brush.
  • Drying time: conventional paint, depending on its type/constitution, normally takes a very long time either for “touch-dry” or “hard-dry”, sometimes as much as 5-6 hours for complete cure, whereas in CSP, it is just less about 15 minutes for “touch-dry” and about 60 minutes for “hard-dry”! Thus, your object to be painted is ready for use within 60 minutes flat!! Thus, CSP increases efficiency, productivity and convenience of use anywhere!!!
  • No special technical skills required- in fact it is so user friendly that any body with common sense can use it.
  • Longer shelf life: conventional paint when not in use (even if packed in a container) becomes very hard over a period of time and may become useless after a year or two, but CSP remains as fresh as ever for three years from the date of manufacture, provided it is used and stored as per instructions.
  • CSP can be used on practically any material (except a few- see below for details), thus giving you a wide choice for multiple applications.

Q.6 How is CSP applied or used? What are steps involved?

A.
The spray painting involves four-step procedure (also read details under Answer 16)

  1. Pre-painting treatment of surface to be painted: Here, the procedure is the same as in the conventional paint- the material surface has to be free of any dirt, grease, rust, etc. For excellent results, the surface should be made smooth by applying a uniform coat of “putty”, well dried and another coat of any good acrylic/nitrocellulose (NC) based primer (see Q.7: Why use primer?). The entire surface should be totally dry before it is ready for painting. The area, where painting is to be done, should be well ventilated, free from dust but not windy (to avoid spread of valuable paint material).
  2. Shake the aerosol can well (you will hear a sound of mixing marble being scrubbed inside-this makes the paint mix well with the propellant inside).
  3. Open the cap and place your thumb on the nozzle and press it (as you do with any normal deodrant spray can). Care should be taken to ensure that the object to be painted and the position of can in your hand should be parallel, that is, position of the can is parallel to the surface to be painted. Also, the distance between the object to be painted and the can should be at least 10-12 inches- if it is too close, you will find paint dripping on the surface, and paint being wasted if it is beyond 12 inches.
  4. While you press the nozzle with your thumb with steady and even rate, ensure a uniform hand motion: either right to left and back or top to bottom and back for better utilization of material and uniform coating. Avoid circular or any other direction/method. Allow it to dry for about 15 minutes in dust free condition. The surface is now “touch-dry” or “tack-free”. It can be used after one hour when it is totally “cured” or “hard-dry”.

Q.7 Why use a “primer” before using CSP?

A. A primer has two-fold effect: first- it provides a smooth surface on the material to be painted as it fills up porous material like paper/wood, and thus saves on the paint material (since porous material has tendency to absorb paint). Second- it acts as an anchor/bond between the surface of the material and the paint, resulting in better adhesion, giving longer lasting painted surface. We recommend any good acrylic/nitrocellulose (NC) based primer to be applied with brush or spray on the pre-treated surface as explained under A.6.a.

Q.8 Can CSP be coated on any material surface?

A. It depends on several factors. CSP can be coated to the following material surfaces: paper; board; wood (with finished surface); mild-steel (iron); other metals; glass; ABS; ceramic, etc. However, for plastic polymers such as PP and other engineering plastics, we have a special PLASTIC SPRAY PAINT (to be available very shortly). CSP also can not be coated on materials like wax and thermo-cole.
We must add here that to get excellent results of hardness and adhesion on materials like glass, metals (particularly brass, copper, aluminum, etc), ABS, ceramic, it is highly recommended to make use of a suitable primer (also known as Etch primer) as first coat. CSP to be used after the primer is totally dry, preferably after an hour, whereas etch primer needs curing time of at least 12 hours.

Q.9 How does CSP offer “value-for-money” (VFM) proposition?

A. Well, we must emphasize here that CSP concept is highly recommended if you are looking out for:

  1. Convenience: “do-it-yourself “ dispensing with the services of a painter
  2. Quick results: CSP increases efficiency and hence maximizes productivity
  3. Versatility: difficult narrow areas can’t be reached through a brush, however, with CSP, no matter what or where, painting is a pleasure with 100% coverage. Similarly, on distant project sites, no need to carry bulky equipment like compressor/spray gun, and no worries of power cuts/generators.

Thus, considering the advantages and benefits of CSP compared to the conventional paint, we can conclude that CSP offers you a premium product with lots of benefits & values for a little extra money.

Q.10 How does CSP compare with stability, hardness, adhesion and flexibility offered by conventional paint?

A. As mentioned earlier, CSP does not differ in terms of basic ingredients used in its manufacture, that is, the major ingredients are the same that are used to formulate the conventional paint, and as such, fundamental characteristics such as stability, hardness, adhesion and flexibility are equal or superior to those offered by the conventional paint. However, you are requested to please carefully analyze the application desired by you and the suitability of our spray paint on your material by checking with our specifications as mentioned under the relevant product group/category, and, in case of any doubt, please do write to us and confirm before using our products.

Q.11 What are Gold/Chrome/Metallic effect paints offered by CSP?

A. CSP offers specially formulated spray paint to provide films with “metallic effect”.These metallic effect paints have the appearance of relevant metal- gold, chrome, silver, etc., but care should be taken to ensure that coated film should avoid scrubbing or clashing to prevent the damage of its metallic effect. In other words, its application should be avoided where the painted surface is likely to be used quite frequently- for example: a door handle/knob.

Q.12 Does CSP offer any protective paint? / What is 190- lacquer?

A. Yes, we do offer a unique acrylic based transparent lacquer in two varieties- 190 (Gloss) and 191 (matt). The utility of this product is two-fold: one- it gives a transparent coating to the surface that is already painted (acrylic or NC based); this coated film protects the surface from abrasion & dust; the surface can be cleaned with a damp cloth; thus enhancing the stability of the coated surface for a longer period of time. Second- it imparts a gloss appearance if 190 is used and a matt finish with 191. This product is ideal for any polished wood surface (any furniture like chair/table/cupboard) that needs a fresh coat of polish (not recommended for a surface coated with PU material). The method of application is similar to our other normal paint categories.

Top

Q13 What is sunshine tolerance lacquer?

A. This is unique transparent lacquer that is sprayed on to the painted surface and the coated film protects the painted surface from being faded away fast, that is, it provides resistance to ultra violet rays.

Q.14 What is the coverage with one can of 400 ml?

A. Well, as with conventional paint, coverage very much depends on several factors like:

  1. the type of surface/material (paper/board/wood absorbs paint to a great extent, smooth surface like glass the least)
  2. quality of surface treatment given before actual painting (smother & filled-up surface will give better coverage)
  3. application method- how, by whom and under what conditions is the paint sprayed – windy room will waste a lot of material; if you are following instructions of spraying and for a normal thickness of film, the coverage is satisfactory. But if you desire a thicker coat, obviously you need to apply more material or two coats of paint, hence less coverage.
  4. Under ideal conditions of use and based on the assumption that above conditions/factors are satisfactory, a coverage of 12-15 sq. ft or more can be achieved with one can of 400 ml.

Top

Q.15 What is the shelf-life under normal conditions?

A. The shelf life of CSP is about three years from the date manufacture/import as mentioned on the can, provided the can is stored properly as per instructions of use. You must ensure that can is properly handled and nozzle covered with the cap provided after every use. After every use, press the nozzle slightly by holding the can up-side down to eject excess air inside. (Also see A. 16 below for better results)

Q.16 What are the precautions to be taken to ensure smooth flow of paint from the aerosol can and achieve satisfactory performance in all respects?

A. Please follow the following precautions (also read instructions given under Answer 6):

  1. In order to have a smooth free flow of paint, care must be taken to avoid blockage of nozzle valve with paint by doing the following:
    i. Shake the can vigorously for a minute before using.
    ii. c
  2. If the paint is being ejected out is not thick enough, that is, mostly it is the propellant, then turn the valve nozzle 180o and use again.
  3. If the paint drips down the surface while spraying or adequate coating is not being formed, it means that you are either too close to the surface or too far from the surface of the material being painted- maintain a distance of 10-12 inches between the can and the material surface.

Q.17 What are safety & health precautions while using or storing CSP can?

A. Following safety precautions should be adhered to while storing and/or using:

  1. Contents are extremely inflammable under pressure; hence keep away from extreme high heat temperatures, open flame, spark or any other source of ignition.
  2. Use only as directed- intentional misuse by deliberately concentrating and inhaling the contents can be harmful or fatal.
  3. Use only under well ventilated conditions and store the can in a dry and cool place, preferably below 46o C. Very high temperatures may lead to explosion.
  4. Avoid contact with skin and inhaling of vapours or spray mist.
  5. In case of contact with skin or eyes, splash repeatedly with warm water and consult a doctor immediately. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting, call physician immediately.
  6. Keep the can out of the reach of children.
  7. Do not puncture or increate container even when empty.

Q.18 What do you mean by GREATER OPACITY / EXCELLENT HIDING POWER?

A. In simple language, the opacity means the ability to keep light passing through, that is, a paint with a high opacity will hide the substrate (material) painted well. In other words, the substrate (material) to be painted will require less paint, thus saving on material cost. CSP range of products gives you excellent hiding power compared to any other similar spray paint product.
